The Qualities Of Wood Barstools And Furniture

Wooden furniture has been popular for centuries. Before new technology made metal and plastic items readily available, the majority of furniture was handcrafted by artisans out of several types of wood. Today fine wood furniture is a rarer commodity, but still popular in homes today. Whether you are interested in purchasing an elaborate cherry wood hutch for the dining room or you simply want a set of four wood barstools, it is a good idea to have a basic understanding of the types of woods manufacturers use for furniture today.

Wood has always been known for its beauty, durability, and workability. Many of the fine woods such as walnut, oak, mahogany, and rosewood, were the main materials for furniture in the 19th century. However, these traditional favorites have become rare because of the increase in demand and the amount of time it takes these trees to mature. These woods therefore, are now used only for fine furniture and even then, they are often only used for the parts that are seen. Lesser quality woods fill in the rest of the piece. As a side note, if you ever have the opportunity to restore a piece of pre-1900s furniture, you should do this restoration! You will gain yourself a beautiful cabinet or table that will last you for many years to come!

There are two categories of wood: hardwood, which comes from flowering trees, and softwood, which comes from conifers. The strength of the wood does not usually reflect what the name implies because the distinction is botanical however, the softwood is rarely used for furniture. Another feature to note is the wood grain and color. Large grained woods, such as oak, walnut, and mahogany, sometimes require filling. Close-grained woods, such as beech, maple, and cherry, are often smoother in appearance because the texture is finer.

Most hardwoods are perfect for furniture; however, the majority of these woods are not ideal for the wear and tear of flooring. If you need wood boards for your floors, oak and maple are among your best choices. Maple is also the number one choice for the woodenware in bowling alleys. If you are interested in purchasing wood barstools, tables, or cabinets for your home, do your research on what type of wood is the most reasonable for the item you want to purchase. There are some beautiful options available as long as you are willing to pay for the quality!
