Giving Your Kitchen a New Look

When your kitchen is looking drab you may be tempted to change anything and everything you can get your hands on. But before you break out the sledge hammer, try a few simple tricks to save your kitchen.

When you’re thinking about changing your kitchen, the first thing you usually do is look at the small appliances. After that your eyes turn to the major appliances, then the countertops, followed by the cupboards, the sinks, the windows, the doors, the pantry, the garbage and the floors.

Take it from a home decorating diva: there’s no need to go to extremes when you’re trying to spruce up a kitchen. Having moved into a home that started with 1960’s horrific orange countertops, I know what it’s like to want to bring in a sledge hammer and knock it all out of the park. But there are simpler ways to face your kitchen woes than by starting all over from scratch. Not to mention, these simple changes will save you loads of cash that could be better spent on massages and nights out on the town.

For example, if you’re looking to turn your floor into something a little less leave it on the floor and deal with later, you could put in brand new tile, stone or carpet. Or you could just buy a modern area rug that not only covers the space you typically don’t worry about until it’s teeming with ants and give your kitchen a whole new look that you weren’t expecting. Not to mention, an area rug is easier to clean than kitchen carpet—milk spills can be sucked right out from both sides instead of hoping and praying that the smell doesn’t linger in the carpet pad forever.

The advantage of using a cotton area rug in the kitchen is that it catches the crumbs, etc. that fall on the floor. When it’s time to clean, you can roll it up, take it outside and shake it out. Voila! You have a mostly clean kitchen floor. Plus, it’s better than mopping every other day.

Some of the other changes you can make are walls and curtains. Curtains are the simplest change because all you have to do is stick up a different style, or even just tie them back and you’ll have a whole new look that will give your kitchen new life.

With your walls, you can go to the nearest dollar store and buy a bunch of those press on tiles and stick them to wall. It will make your home look professionally tiled and will give your kitchen a sort of café feeling that will make you want to spend more instead of less time looking at it.

If that’s not enough for you, consider changing your lighting. The lighting effects in a kitchen can be one of the most important changes you make because it will give your kitchen a different feeling all together. Low light will make it seem more relaxed and high light will make it seem more upbeat.

Remember, when you decide to vamp up your kitchen, you don’t have to tear out all of the major appliances and the floors. A few simple tricks can save your sanity, your kitchen and your cash.

A Guide to Post-Flood Measures

Floods have become one most of the most destructive natural disasters for around two years now. It has destroyed homes and eroded precious land in several parts of the world. The destruction caused is often so enormous that it takes years to repair the damages, and the mental trauma encountered is colossal. Those who have lost their homes during these floods would appreciate a few helpful pointers that could aid them in bearing up with the consequences of such floods.

Monetary aid-

1. Firstly, something as basic as insurance can go a long way in helping you bear up with the repercussions of flood damages. Contact your insurance company and verify whether the policy you have opted for covers the damages you have suffered. Investing in flood insurance would be a sensible decision during such times because homeowner’s insurance policies do not extend their coverage to flood related losses.

2. Secondly, other voluntary service groups extend help to all those victims of flood-zones who have incurred huge losses. You can contact agencies such as local church groups, Red Cross, and civic clubs. During national declared disasters caused by floods, telephone hotlines distributing such information are made available.

Measures for safety after the flood-

The first impulse of those who have been forced to evacuate their homes during the floods is to enter their houses after the flood has subsided. However, you should venture inside only when the local officials have declared it as a safe residence. Exercise precaution and avoid entering if the water still stands inside your home.

1. Check whether the power lines inside your house are intact or not. Report to the local officials if you find any hazardous broken lines that have been lying under the water level. Turn off all such utilities before getting a thorough inspection and restoration done by professionals. Check your waterlines and sewage provisions systematically, because the water if infected can be a health hazard.

2. Next, inspect whether there has been a gas leak or not. Avoid switching on any electric appliance inside your house when you enter it because there is a risk of a fire in such cases. Use flashlights that use batteries for power generation while subjecting your house to a careful scrutiny.

3. Another feature that must be checked is the foundations of your house. Inspect the walls, staircases, and floors. Get a professional to repair such structural damages.

4. If your car batteries or other such tanks containing hazardous chemicals are leaking, make sure you take proper professional help to eliminate such risks.

Cleaning up after the flood-

Disinfecting your home after the flood should be on your priority list. You can procure a disinfectant or cleaning solution from the store or use your own homemade remedies like mixing 1/2 cup of chlorine with a gallon of water to clean the walls, floor, and every surface that had been drowned by water. Open all windows to ensure that the rooms are well ventilated. Sunlight too helps in killing germs.

Prevention is better than cure-

There is always a risk of your home being flooded once over again. Make sure you take measures like storing food for emergencies, chalking new plans for immediate evacuation, and getting flood insurance done. If the flooding was due to pipe leakages, make sure you have proper water alarms and detectors installed in such vulnerable areas of your residence.

Color, Furniture and Light: The Key to Giving Your Home a New Look

Did you recently buy a new home and you don’t know how to fix it up? Or have you always wanted to give your home a new look but don’t know where to start? There are three basic ideas that you need to play with to give your home that fabulously comfortable look.

Paint the house down

The new look could be instantly achieved by just changing the colors of your wall. Choosing the right color makes a space more inviting. Before you go ahead and pick up a color, you must decide first on what look you want for your home. If you want a calm and clean look, then earth tones and neutral colors would be the best way to go. If you want a lively and bubbly feel, then you could go for bright colors.

Do not limit your imagination when it comes to color. It is a common practice to paint the whole house with just one color. This time, try to combine different colors. What you can do is choose a wall that you want to serve as the focal point of the room. Paint that wall in a different color than the rest of the room and you instantly have a feature wall. But you must make sure that the colors go together. For your feature wall, you could choose a darker shade of your general wall color. That way it would stand out and at the same time blend in with the rest of the room.

Pick out the right stuff

Choosing furniture is perhaps the most tedious part of home renovation. But this task could be much easier if you know what to look out for. In picking out furniture, the first thing you should consider is the size. Make sure that what you buy can actually fit into your space. Do not make the mistake of overcrowding your house by buying furniture that is not proportionate to the space. If you do so, you will just make your house look cramped and dwarfed rather than grand and wide.

Another important thing to consider is the color. Make sure that your furniture will match your house’s color scheme. Mismatched colors could be a real eyesore. If your walls are in subdued colors, then you can play with a bit of color in your furniture. If your walls are already bright enough, then you could tone your home a bit by picking out furniture in neutral colors.

Touch it up with light

Do not forget to add drama to your space by enhancing it with the right lighting. Light can do so much for your space. A well-lit room always looks cozy and inviting. If you have the budget, you can re-plan your home’s lighting to put general and mood lights at the right places.

If you are in a tight budget, you can pick out a few light fixtures to add mood lighting. Chances are you already have an existing general lighting so you just need to enhance the mood a bit by adding nice pieces such as chandeliers, pendants, table lamps, or wall lamps.

Organising & Cleaning Garden Sheds

Garden sheds come in all shapes and sizes and vary in price, but there is one thing they can have in common and that is clutter. The garden shed tends to be home for all the gardening tools and everything else that can not find a home in the house. So if you find yourself taking half-an-hour to locate something you need, it is probably time to take ‘the bull-by-the-horns’ and organise your garden shed.

Plan

Organising a garden shed can seem like an overwhelming job, but if it’s broken down into smaller tasks it can be achieved without you feeling discouraged. The first step is to make a plan, such as: the completion date, what’s going to stay in your garden shed, what needs to be thrown, and what type of storage equipment you need. Last but least plan the treat you’re going to give yourself after each task is completed!

Dealing with clutter in your garden shed

Tackling clutter in your garden shed can sometimes be difficult to deal with because of the ‘just-in-case’ scenario. A few guidelines may help you decide if you need to keep it or pitch it: if you’ve no idea what it is, if you haven’t used it for over a year, if it’s broken and can not be fixed, or if it’s broken and you’ll probably never get round to fixing it! It can help to deal with one area of your garden shed at a time, for example, starting on the left-hand side and working round.

Once you’ve de-cluttered your garden shed the next step is to sort your stuff into your categories such as: gardening tools and equipments, hardware and tools, outdoor sports equipment, decorating paraphernalia, power tools, and outdoor seasonal decorations.

Cleaning your garden shed

Now that you have everything in neat piles, you’ll probably need to give your garden shed a clean to remove the resident spider/s and spider webs, oil-stains, dried putty, paint, and general dust and dirt. Here are a few tips:

Spider webs – use a stick with some duct tape wrapped around with the sticky side facing outwards. A large broom or a vacuum cleaner is also effective.

Oil stain – remove as much liquid oil as possible with paper towels. Place a cloth saturated with hydrogen peroxide on the stain, wipe the area dry and wash your garden shed floor with a wood cleaner.

Hard putty – brush on paraffin oil. This dissolves the linseed oil in the putty and softens it for removal.

Oiled-based paint or varnish stains – carefully rub the affected area with a cloth dampened in a formulated paint remover.

Dirty surfaces – spray cleaner directly onto the surface and wipe clean. For caked on dirt, spray on the cleaner and allow it to soak for several minutes, before wiping clean. Rinse thoroughly with water and wipe clean.

Storage ideas

To utilise every inch in your garden shed so you can maximise your storage and work space there are several options available to keep your categorised stuff together:

Hanging hooks – they are excellent garden shed organisers for keeping your garden tools in one place.

Shelving – keeps your equipment tidy and in one place.

Containers – ideal for keeping your bits ‘n’ bobs in. Don’t forget to label them!

Pegboards – makes a handy area for hanging small tools, paintbrushes, and extension cords in your garden shed.

Tool box – try to purchase one that will grow with your collection, especially if you enjoy DIY or car maintenance.

Conclusion

Garden sheds can hold a huge amount of ‘stuff,’ and a clean and organised one can enhance the enjoyment of owning a garden shed.

How To Decorate Your Dinner Table In A Way To Impress Your Guests

When you invite guests to come to your home to share a meal with you, setting an attractive table is as important as serving good food. Your table setting is the first thing that your guests will see and can actually influence their appetites. This is why you should chose your setting carefully, based on whether the dinner is to be casual or elegant.

If you are having a formal dinner, then using a cream colored, linen tablecloth with matching cloth napkins is great for this type of dinner. You an accent it with a crystal or gold vase filled with flowers. Be sure to use a low vase, so that your guests' views of each other will not be blocked and you can use a large one for the center of the table and two small matching ones at the end. Candles also add a touch of elegance.

Instead of using typical candle holders, considering using votives that you can set in bowls of water. Floating scented candles are another way to add grace and elegance to your table. If you prefer a modern type of elegance, then forget about using your grandmother's china and purchase some of the newer dinnerware that uses colorful geometric shapes.

If you are having a casual dinner, then consider using brightly colored tablecloths and napkins. They add festiveness to the table and can be complimented with floral arrangements that match the colors that you use. You can buy utensils that have colored stems and glasses in colors to match. There are many casual place mats that are attractive and affordable. They will not only add a since of style to your place setting but will protect your table cloth as well.

Themed dinners such as those served at holiday time, can be especially fun to decorate for. There is lots of dinnerware and utensils that have holiday themes and you can even band miniature Christmas tree ornaments together to make attractive compliments to your table. Red and gold are great colors to use for these dinners and don't forget to break out the punch bowl for eggnog. If wine is going to be served, use crystal stemware.

How you serve the food is also important. You should have pitchers of water at each end of the table and serve the appetizers first. Once they have been eaten, clear the table to make room for the main dishes. Replace soiled napkins and refill the water pitchers.

Your desert should be as inviting as the main course. Consider peach cobbler or a chocolate layer cake. Always have a sugar free alternative in case one of your guests can not eat food that contains sugar.

Be attentive to your guests and engage them in conversation. Make them laugh and they will appreciate you even more.

How to Choose an Outdoor Grill

If you will be grilling for one or two people, you will not need a large grill. A small grill would be better for your needs. If, on the other hand, you will be cooking large meals, or for a number of people, then you may want to get a larger grill, as you will have more space and the ability to cook and keep food warm at the same time. You will also want to consider a larger grill if you will be grilling briskets, or other large items. A small grill is suffice for chicken, fish, or veggies, particularly if you are not dealing with large quantities.

If time is of the essence, then a gas or electric grill is the way to go. While I am personally partial to the taste of charcoal grilling, it does take considerably more time to get ready. Charcoal can take 15 minutes and more to be completely ready. With a gas grill, you just ignite and wait a few minutes, then your ready to cook.

Space is another consideration. You do not want to try to fit a large, super capacity grill into a small, confined space, like a balcony or a very small patio. Be sure to have adequate measurements, as it will prevent you from having to return a grill that's too big.

Smokers often give you the ability to smoke or grill. If want to grill and not have to buy a separate smoker, then a combined grill with a side smoke box, is probably the best pick.

Regardless to what you decide on, remember that you're dealing with fire. So, please take precautions, when grilling. Be careful where you set up your grill; leave ample distance between your grill and any building structures, particularly vinyl siding.

Easy Ways to Update your Kitchen

If you are looking for some ideas to redecorate your kitchen, it doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming. Some minor changes that you can do on your own can really change the overall affect the room has. Many of us spend a great deal of time in the kitchen cooking, eating, and visiting with our family and friends. It is important that our kitchen has a very comfortable feeling to it. Some simple projects include adding a new kitchen sink, counters, and even bar stools.

Changing the design of your kitchen sink can change the look of any style of kitchen. There are many designs to select from so you will be able to find exactly what you are looking for. You will likely want to choose a kitchen sink that fits the space you already have designated for it. However, if you need a deeper kitchen sink or a wider one it is possible to do so by cutting away some of the counter space.

Some of the newer models of kitchen sinks feature one deep side and one shallow side. Others feature three separate compartments instead of the traditional one or two style. The type of material you choose for your kitchen sink will really influence the overall look. Choose from stainless steel, cast iron, or copper.

Probably one of the most common kitchen decorating options is redoing the counters. This can be simply redoing them in a new color and material or changing the layout of the kitchen so you have more counter space. In many open kitchens one complaint is too much space that isn’t being used. To remedy this type of situation a straight counter can be turned into a T shape or an L shape to let you take advantage of some of the open spaces. You can also place an island in the middle of the kitchen to serve as a work area.

There are many different types of counter top materials you can choose from. There are also so many colors that you will definitely find one to match the overall décor of your kitchen area. The most common type of counter material is granite. This is very solid and it will last for years.

Adding bar stools to your kitchen area is a great way to give it some flare. It will also provide you with some additional room when you have a few too many people for your kitchen table to hold. Bar stools are available in a variety of colors so look for something to match with the flooring and the cabinets in your kitchen.

They are available in metal or wood materials and they come in a variety of styles. Many of them don’t have backs but many people prefer those that do have a regular chair back on them. Look for bar stools that have a durable and comfortable seat. You also need to carefully consider the height of your counters. The bar stools need to fit under them properly and provide a comfortable reach from the sitting position to the counter area.

Stair Lifts and Safety

Walking up and down the stairs is something that is often taken for granted when we are young. As we bound up the steps 2 at a time, we do not realize that for many the steps present a very large obstacle. If you can not easily or safely use the stairs in your home, you might be tempted to avoid the upstairs areas and might even consider selling your house. These options are unnecessary if you own a stair lift.

A stair lift is a mobility aid that is installed to a staircase and is used to carry an individual up and down the staircase. In most cases a strong aluminum track is secured directly to the stairs. Attached to the track is a car unit that consists of an electric motor and a chair or small platform. The car travels up and down the stairs on the track and can support one rider.

Many people choose to install the stair lift on their own and if you have a straight staircase, this process can generally be done quickly and efficiently. The first step is to secure the track to the steps. Generally the car comes loaded on a short piece of track and this small piece of track is connected to the track on the stairs. The car unit, which consists of electrical motor, chair or platform, and in some cases batteries. The car can be quite heavy, so it is a good idea to get some help bringing it to the top of the stairs. After the small piece of track that holds the car is attached to the stairs, the car is plugged in and backed down onto the track. The small piece of track can then be removed.

While a stair lift for a straight staircase can be installed quickly and inexpensively, if you have a curved staircase, it will cost much more and require professional installation. Sometimes it is possible to install 2 straight stair lifts, but this can only be done on "L" shaped staircases that have a landing. This is much less expensive and can be ordered and installed in less than a week, but if you must go with a curved stair lift you are looking at a process that can last over 2 months from the time of order to the time it is installed.

Stair lifts provide a great way to bridge the gap between areas of different elevation in a home. They can also be used outdoors on the front steps and greatly improve mobility.

How to Protect Your Home Against Global Warming

Today, with the great impact of dangerous emissions affecting the Ozone layer leading to unpredictable changes in weather, together at a time where economic difficulties seem to be getting worse with the threat of the credit crunch leading towards a recession, people can only be left holding on tight to what they have.

But still, as the credit crunch continues to hit Britain with the ongoing talks on a possible recession, and as more people avoid using their heaters as the so called 'summer' season turns into winter, it's only best to be safe than sorry and to take that extra step in protecting your homes as well as our pockets. So what measures do you have to take to protect your home?

The Association of British Insurers, (ABI) stated that many people insure their homes and possessions through the understanding that if anything may happen to their home due to the typical British weather, their home insurance policy will cover the costs of any damage.

It is believed that as storms rage across the country, thousands of homeowners will discover they don't have the protection they need.

Earlier this year, Sainsbury's Bank revealed that 1.78m homeowners do not have building insurance while 656,000 homeowners are not aware of the cover they have.

The ABI emphasises that "Insurance is not a maintenance contract and is no substitute for keeping the property in a reasonable state of repair." If the insurer believes that the damage has been caused because you have failed to take reasonable precautions to take care of the property, the damage may not be covered or may be reduced if it is believed that the damage was made worse due to poor maintenance.

According to the ABI, a lot can be done to reduce the risk of suffering weather damage.

If your home is in an area which is prone to flooding, it is essential that you ensure that your home insurance covers flood damage. Homeowers are advised if they live in high flood risk areas, electricity metres should be moved higher to guarantee they are out of flood depth. It is also important to use water resistant materials when fitting units into the home as well as providing space for sandbags in case of a flooding emergency.

The ABI also suggests that clearing out drain pipes regularly allowing water to pass through rather than over flow along the sides of the house may avoid causing major damage to the exterior of the home. Preventing other pipes in the home from freezing is also a necessary step to take when taking measures to protect the home. By leaving the heating on low allowing warm air to pass from other parts from the house can help prevent this.

Earlier this month, forecasters believed that September could be the record month for rainfall causing further debates as pressure arose on those in high flood risk areas. Many home insurance premiums have already increased due to previous damage from last year's floods which cost insurers over £3bn.

Gaggenau Kitchen Appliances - Oldest Appliance Brand in the World

First of all some background on the company: Gaggenau was founded in 1681 by Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden. He established an ironworks in the German town Gaggenau, and named the company after the town. It is both the oldest and widest distributed appliance brand and over the years, Gaggenau expanded into the manufacture of coal-fired cookers and some of the first gas cookers. But technology has moved on considerably since then and Gaggenau embraced the changes and has been credited as the leader in introducing European convection ovens, the pyrolytic self-cleaning mode, and 36-inch ovens in North America.

Gaggenau's world headquarters is still located in the city of Gaggenau, Germany to maintain some of the tradition and history of the company. But Gaggenau kitchen appliances are manufactured in several countries across Europe and North America including Lipsheim, France, Bretten and Dillingen in Germany and Boston in Massachusetts.

Gaggenau has over 550 employees in 50 countries and is currently the only manufacturer that offers a combination steam oven with true convection plus multiple humidity settings in one unit for the home chef.

Gaggenau specialises in cutting-edge built-in home appliances. Its portfolio includes ovens, gas, electric and induction cook- tops, ventilation, dishwashers, modular refrigeration and freezer columns and wine storage units. Gaggenau also produces specialty appliances such as steamers, grills and deep fryers, and the Asian-influenced Teppan Yaki. These are more luxury items and available to customers with a big budget.

Now for some product information: Well some of the appliances that Gaggenau is particularly proud of are the Modular Column Refrigerators and Freezers. Home Filtration of Tap Water is Necessary For Your Good Health

Home filtration of tap water is a necessary part of a complete water treatment plan. But, finding an effective water purification device is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Trying to save money, while doing it, is another part of the problem.

If you aren't careful, you'll spend a lot more than you need to and still end up drinking or showering in chemical contaminants. You could still be drinking lead, even with an expensive reverse osmosis or RO system. The devices only reduce lead to within the "federal action level."

Let me tell you something. If the amount of lead in your water exceeds the federal action level, there is something wrong with your public treatment facility. They have to make changes if these high levels are detected. That's why it's called the federal "action" level.

There are companies that provide home filtration of tap water systems that include an ion exchange step. These systems remove more than 99% of lead, without removing beneficial minerals like reverse osmosis does.

Depending on where you live, you may have a relatively healthy mineral content in your supply. RO was originally designed to de-mineralize water. The minerals cause corrosion in delicate industrial equipment. But, these same minerals are a benefit for drinking water, as they contribute to our good health.

Ion exchange systems can even improve the mineral content by exchanging traces of lead and copper for potassium and sodium. Chlorine corrodes the lead and copper pipes that transport water to our homes. So, most of us have trace copper and lead running out of our faucets.

Copper is not particularly dangerous, but it does spoil the taste and stain fixtures. In the shower, it dulls hair-color and reacts with chemicals used to color-treat hair. The result can be an orange or greenish tinge.

Finding effective home filtration of tap water for showering is even more difficult than finding effective drinking water filters. Most of the systems on the market slightly reduce chlorine and that's it.

Here's another fact for you. If you have chlorine in your water, you also have chlorine byproducts, technically referred to as THMs. There are only a couple of showerhead filters that remove THMs. The best buy costs around $70.

The high priced Wellness brand, costing over $200, does not really do anything special. The company makes exaggerated claims and the price is based on the inclusion of "rare" Japanese stones. Don't believe it, and don't buy it.

The best home filtration of tap water is achieved with a multi-stage device that includes granular carbon to remove chlorine and a multi-media block to remove THMs. The block has a sub-micron porous structure that removes parasitic cysts and microscopic sediments. The structure also prevents water from cycling around and not being cleaned, as happens with devices that only use granular carbon.

For less than a dime per gallon, your family can have all of the clean drinking water that they need every day. That is cost effective home filtration of tap water, since buying bottled would cost at least ten times that amount. Plus, home-filtered water tastes better, as long as you get the right system.
